If your idea of a perfect Ubud morning is “leave the villa, see something beautiful, and still be back before the day gets too hot,” you’re in luck. Elephant Villa 4 sits close enough to two of the area’s easiest and most rewarding walks. You can do either (or both) without needing a driver, a map, or any athletic thoughts whatsoever.
First up is the famous Campuhan Ridge Walk. It starts a short stroll west from the end of JL. Bisma (where Elephant Villa 4 is!) You climb a few steps, then follow a narrow ridge between two river valleys. The path is mostly gentle, the views open out quickly, and the only real challenge is resisting the urge to stop every thirty seconds for another photo. It’s free and takes around 60-90 minutes. A common turnaround point is the ever-popular Karsa Kafe. The main hazard is the sun once it gets high, so most people go early. I recommend wearing good walking shoes, bringing water, and applying bug spray! You’ll share the trail with other walkers and the occasional local jogger, but it still feels like a proper escape from town.
The second walk is the Sweet Orange Walking Trail (also known as the Kajeng or Subak Juwuk Manis rice-field walk). This starts behind Puri Lukisan Museum and meanders through the paddies just north of the centre. It’s flatter than the ridge, roughly 2–3 km depending on how far you go, and it has the distinct advantage of ending (or pausing) at Sweet Orange Warung. This warung is highly recommended and sits right among the fields; it serves good food, cold drinks, and good coffee. It is the kind of place where you can sit, stare at the rice fields and decide the rest of the day can just wait a while. You can also do a loop, walking up through the Art Market near Jalan Bisma.
Both walks are genuinely easy, free, and close enough that you can do them from the Villa without any fuss. Do one before breakfast, the other later in the day when the light is softer, or combine them if you’re feeling ambitious. Either way, you’ll be back at the villa with a few good photos and the pleasant feeling that you earned your next poolside drink.
